First Indian Classical LP by a Swedish artist

KG Westman has created a beautiful and remarkable album. After more than fifteen years of rigorous study, KG is now a mature musician of Indian classical music. As his teacher, I am enormously proud.

This album features two ragas, Raga Anandpriya, which KG has composed, and Raga Kirwani, which began as a Carnatic raga and is now a staple of Hindustani music.

Raga Anandpriya is both lyrical and balanced. The ascending notes are N S g M^ P N, corresponding to Raga Multani, which conjures the feeling of a leisurely afternoon. The descending notes are S n P M^ g S with komal (flat) ni (7th), corresponding to Raga Madhukosh, which brings the sensation of a charming evening. This piece is also reminiscent of Carnatic music, as though ascending in Raga Anandavali and descending in Raga Samudrapriya. KG’s creation is more than just a combination of two ragas. It is a new creation that inspires thoughts of meditation and transcendence.

Raga Kirwani is an evening raga, following a harmonic minor according to Western music. It is a joyful raga yet also sentimental, even heart-rending. It is associated with feelings of love and devotion, which is why it is used as the basis for many devotional songs (bhajans). KG’s rendition of this raga carries the listener upward, showing the power of this sacred music.

Listening to this album is a sublime delight. KG demonstrates not only his mastery of the sitar but his rich imagination and creativity. Listeners will be transported.

This is kind of a monolithic album imho, yet somehow it's OSJC's most approachable album (that I've heard so far, I guess). I say that as a person who initially balked at the runtimes - I'm a "brevity is the soul of wit" kinda guy. That said, these jams are absolutely first-class. You do not feel the length at all, they're more like soundtracks to an inner movie. Soft Velvet Underbelly makes me wish I still played Elite: Dangerous, so I could commit space piracy to it. Has a great coda, too. Smekermann
